Rev. Fernando Santillana is an Elder in full connection with the United Methodist Church. He served the Pico Rivera UMC 1980-1986. In 1984 he completed his studies at the Claremont School of Theology with a Doctor of Ministry. His ordination as an Elder took place at the Annual Conference of 1983. He served as missionary from 1987 to 1999: Seminary professor in Peru, Brazil and Mexico. In 1997 he obtained a Ph.D. in Education Administration.
In 1999 he was invited to serve as the Director for Latino Ministries at the California-Pacific Annual Conference; he was in that position until 2007 when he was appointed to Norwalk UMC.

Fernando Benjamin Santillana Haynes was born February 9, 1940 in Callao, Peru, to Benjamin Santillana and Jessie Haynes. He has one living sister Amparo Pachas. He met his future wife Rev. Teresa Santillana as Methodist youth in Lima, Peru, 1960.
Due to his training at the Methodist High School in Lima, Peru, Colegio America, he got a job at NASA in 1957. He later migrated to the United States in 1961, where he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He married his sweetheart, Teresa, in 1965 in Lima, Peru. Together they lived in Colorado Springs, where they had their first child Diego Alonso Fernando Santillana in 1967.
Fernando completed 8 years with the Air Force and left in 1970 to work with an oil company, Welex, in Great Bend, Kansas in 1970. That same year their second child, Sofia Lorena Teresa Santillana was born. Five months after Sofia was born, Welex transferred Fernando to Argentina, where Teresa and Fernando lived with their two children for 3 years.
In 1973, they returned to the US and were transferred to Casper, Wyoming, where their third child, Rocio del Pilar Teresa Santillana, was born. The company then relocated them to Santa Paula, California in 1974.
In Santa Paula, California, the Santillanas joined El Buen Pastor UMC. 1980 Fernando received his call in ordained ministry and entered the seminary at Claremont School of Theology. His first appointment as a student pastor is at Pico Rivera UMC, where he served for 7 years.
In 1987, Fernando and Teresa along with their two daughters move to Lima, Peru, as missionaries. Fernando and Teresa both served at the CBT in Lima, Peru which Fernando was a founder. Then in 1990 Fernando, Teresa and their youngest daughter moved to Porto Alegre, Brazil. Fernando and Teresa moved back to the US in 1994, and served in Dallas, Texas.
From 1999 to 2007 Fernando was Director of Latino Ministries for the Cal-Pac Conference. Fernando was accepted and ordained as a Knight of The Knights Templar in Granada, Spain, in 2007. His last appointment was at Norwalk UMC before his retirment in June 2011, where he was pastor.

Fernando Benjamín Santillana Haynes creció en un hogar Metodista allá en su nativo Perú. El nunca fue miembro de otra denominación. Casado con la también Rev. Teresa Santillana procrearon un hijo y dos hijas. (Su hijo, Diego, falleció hace unos 7 años.)
Los primeros estudios del Rev. Santillana fueron en el colegio Metodista "América" en la ciudad del Callao, Perú. Estando en USA estudió Ingeniería Electrónica y completó otro bachillerato en Administración de Empresas. Finalmente, vino a formar parte del cuerpo estudiantil de Claremont School of Theology (CST), donde obtuvo una Maestría y un Doctorado. Asimismo, obtuvo un segundo doctorado en Administración de la Educación.
Su primera asignación pastoral, ocurre cuando cursaba el segundo año de estudios en CST, siendo enviado a la IMU de Pico Rivera. Al momento de su retiro, sirve como pastor en Norwalk U.M.C. en el distrito de Santa Ana. Fernando siempre sirvió iglesias latinas hasta que fue enviado a Norwalk UMC, donde comenzó un servicio en Español, formándose un buen grupo los cuales son miemhros activos de dicha congregación.
En sus funciones a favor de la comunidad Hispana/Latina dentro de la IMU, durante los años 1999 hasta el 2007, el Rev. Santillana laboró como Director de la Oficina de Ministerios Hispanos en la Conferencia California - Pacífico. Como un "secreto" su esposa, la Rev. Teresa Santillana, nos indica que la función favorita del Rev. Fernando, "es involucrarse y servir a la comunidad, pero en especial a la comunidad Latina." Así mismo, nos revela que "la función menos favorita de Fernando es tener que hacer la parte administrativa."
Por otro lado, una de las estrategias que más gusta al Rev. Santillana en el ejercicio de su ministerio pastoral, es el contacto personal y directo con la gente y tener una apertura para conversar de religión desde la perspectiva del "otro". En este sentido de relación con el "otro," dos de las frases sobre las cuales ha basado su función pastoral son: "Servir al otro/a es servir a Dios" y "No sirve hablar o predicar de Dios, sino se sirve y se habla el idioma del otro/a."
El Rev. Fernando Benjamín Santillana Haynes fue ordenado por el Obispo Tuell en 1986 celebrando hoy más de 30 años de servicio a Dios a través del servicio a su prójimo. Aún no tiene planes específicos al momento de su retiro... ¡Que lo disfrute!
