On July 1,1976, John became Reverend John McFarland. As the USA celebrated 200 years as a nation, Parson John started a forty year journey as a United Methodist pastor. He was first appointed to school–Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley. In 1978 he received his Masters of Divinity, and became the Youth & Evangelism Pastor at San Dieguito UMC. In 1980 Bishop Golden ordained Parson John as a full time Elder.
His first appointment as a senior pastor came in 1981 when he went to the 15 member United Methodist Church in Calexico, California. He met Kathleen there, and they were married in 1986. Their first appointment as husband and wife was to Fountain Valley UMC. Pastor John came to OUMC after a 26 year ministry in Fountain Valley and the last 5 years in a two point charge with Surf City Church of Huntington Beach.
Parson John received his Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1999.
Their 5 children were all born in Fountain Valley. Ted (26) & wife Katrina live in Kansas. Mikaela (24) & Wade Curtis live in Buena Park. Kendall (22) is a nursing student at Cal Baptist University, Forrest (19) will be at Fullerton College in the Fall and Chad (15) is home schooled. Their Hispanic foster son Gabriel is directing the Victory Outreach English ministry in Tijuana.
We are thankful for our Parson's first two years among us as pastor to our English and Spanish ministry and look forward to the years ahead.
